I worked on the worldwide launch of Ovi, Nokia’s app store. Unless you’ve been under a shell for the past year, you know that apps are programs, like games and tools, that run on smartphones. When we started thinking up widgets, my first thought was, "oh man not another useless thingamajig." The idea to use Twitter to promote Ovi, had the potential to create buzz again and again, not only from people sharing the widget, but also from auto tweets. The idea of sharing what people love was a perfect fit for Twitter. And when we built the Ovi store right into the widget, it took everything to a whole new level.
At first, mashing together the Twitter and Ovi brands seemed like a design nightmare. Moving the Twitter functionality to the top pulled the whole thing together. The end design combines the playfulness of the Twitter bird with Ovi's typeface, "apps waterfall" and colors.
I still find it amazing how many posts you can send out with one click. For example, someone who has their Twitter feeds auto post to Facebook gets two posts for the price of none!
Try out the Ovi Twitter widget yourself, and all the campaign elements.
