The First “Don’t Fence Me In” Remix by Kutiman Is Live! Watch it. Share it. And join the Remix.

Nokia has just launched an amazing new Smartphone – the Nokia Astound. It’s made to perform. And to celebrate this launch YouTube mashup master Kutiman is doing his magic on two crowd-sourced video remixes of the American classic “Don’t Fence Me In.”  Remix #1 is now live on YouTube/nokiaus and NokiaUsa.com/Astound –  it's already being shared by thousands of viewers.

Now it's your turn to join in. Kutiman will be choosing his favorite performance to be in the next remix. But the deadline is May 9. So grab your instruments or warm up your voice and star in your own “Don’t Fence Me In” video on YouTube/nokiaus or on NokiaUsa.com/Astound

Beyond Cookies - An Introduction to Fingerprinting

The increasing awareness of, and concerns with, online tracking technologies such as cookies have led several new firms to introduce cookie alternative for tracking and identification purposes. Once such approach, know as device fingerprinting, takes advantage of all of the information a computer typically broadcasts unknowingly when going online to form a uniquely identifiable device profile.

Collecting web browser configuration information to unique identify users isn't new; it's long been used to uniquely identify users in an effort to accurately measure traffic, filter out attempts at click fraud, and customize the experience presented. Device fingerprinting startups targeting online advertising utilize a variety of techniques, including data collection scripts that execute within the browser, that help build a unique fingerprint based on a variety of factors. Because they don't rely on cookies, but rather a combination of passive (data the browser provides normally) and active (client-side code embedded in a web page that pulls additional data), they are much more difficult to bypass or defeat than cookies (see How to Fingerprint A Computer for details).

While this would seem to provide a much greater level of accuracy in tracking user activity, it's the promise of combining this fingerprinting technology with data exchanges that aggregates information about these users to further "score" these individual identities for considerations such as reputation, behavior, intention, and affinity holds great promise, as does the potential to associate these profiles with other data sources to provide more focused targeting, with greater levels of accuracy vs. cookies.

As for addressing privacy concerns, fingerprinting's increased accuracy in identifying individuals also benefits those wishing to "opt out", although the inability to effectively block fingerprinting is sure to raise concerns as its use grows. One immediately accessible technique is the "private" browsing mode already available in most browsers. As for assessing how unique your particular setup is, The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a tool, Panopticlick, that determines how unique a particular browser configurations is.

Which mode are you?

 
Most of us who work on Mad Ave have a pretty frenetic pace of living. Sometimes it’s a late night that runs into early. Other days are fluid and flexible with a moment to ruminate on a concept in the park. We are perpetually moving through many different modes, pitch mode, work mode, gym mode and the oft-elusive weekend mode.

How many phones and computers to you carry around to do all these things? Wouldn’t it be nice if there were one device that separated work life from personal life? So you could do one thing at a time – focus and do it well.

Actually there is – the Nokia E73 Mode. We’ve just finished up the digital launch campaign for North America with a fully-loaded series of interactive banners (standard, rich and synchronized), product page and Facebook page.

Wunderman and New Yorkers Volunteer Ask: What Are You Waiting For?

That’s the question for thousands of people passing through New York’s Times Square.  It will be asked 18 times a day. We created a 15-second New Yorkers Volunteer digital spot for the CBS Neutron display on 42^nd Street, which asks people to make “a real difference” by volunteering to support their community.

Has twitter killed the rss feed?

I was listening to Video Killed the Radio Star when I wrote that headline... but the song made me think about how quickly the news / entertainment feed has evolved.

When I started blogging a few years back, I  used to wake up and check performances of my websites, sometimes it was a two hour process to check trackbacks, buzz on Technorati, RSS submissions, Google Analytics, and website backend for comments, submissions, and recent activity. 

Now I just check to see who Tweeted me.    

It's sad, but I see that fewer people linking to your site from their blogs, websites, and social profiles. Entire web communities have moved to Twitter and people prefer to Tweet favorite links, good articles, viral stuff etc.

Do we all have marketing AD/HD?

As I walked the floor of the Cannes Intl. Ad fest this afternoon, I noted that the vast majority of the work was a display of digital objects. It's not that I think the work is bad.  There are some fantastic executions shortlisted. I really like the Ikea tagging project and the Nike Chalk Bot, but each is an example of a stunt. One trend that seems to be partly a result of the global recession is that most brands backed away from bold ideas and platforms for smaller marketing moments.  Could the the other reason for the lack of bold ideas and platforms be that we may have marketing AD/HD?

A branded experience requires time to build, one point of view, a coordinated team effort and most importantly... focus and consistency.  This year I have only witnessed 2 really bold and focused platforms. Pepsi's Refresh Everything is a long term platform that has turned the Cola wars into something deeper than star power.  I think Coke's platform for Happiness is an example that has the potential to deliver phenomenal results.

If our customers are requiring us to be more to them than an ad, how do we get focused to begin turning the tide towards branded digital storytelling?  Is there are a drug we can take for our marketing AD/HD?
