There's an excellent article in today's NYT about augmented reality with a run-through of various current and future applications for the technology. I've been hearing a lot about Wikitude.me for Android phones which overlays a real world point of interest location with Wikipedia data.
What I found really exciting were some of the apps currently in development. For example, BMW is creating a way of using AR under the hood of a car to help mechanics diagnose problems. By combining GPS and image-recognition, this puts another dimension to the application of digitized information.
Think of how self-sufficient we could become with AR. It could truly revolutionize DIY. At-home root canals anyone?
